BA Economics, UVA | M.Ed. Education, UVA | ALM Global Develo

Former Teacher & Nanny | Harvard & UVA Guest Lecturer

Gwen Cassady believes that education is about far more than grades—it is about helping each student discover how they learn, what they are capable of, and the confidence to keep growing. As the founder of Thoughtful Tutor, Gwen brings together a background in education, economics, global development, teaching, and one-on-one mentoring to provide highly personalized academic support for students and families.

Gwen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Virginia and later returned to UVA to earn a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction. She continued her education at Harvard University, where she earned a Master of Liberal Arts in Global Development Practice. Her academic experiences have taken her from economics and education to sustainability, child development, public policy, and some of the most complex social issues facing communities around the world.

But Gwen's approach to tutoring was shaped by much more than the classroom. Over the years, she has worked as a teacher, tutor, nanny, educator, entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and guest lecturer at Harvard and UVA. These experiences have given her the opportunity to work with learners of different ages, personalities, backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles—and reinforced her belief that there is simply no single approach that works for every student.

At Thoughtful Tutor, Gwen begins with the individual. She takes time to understand a student's strengths as well as the areas where they may be struggling. Whether a student needs help mastering academic material, completing homework, organizing assignments, developing stronger study habits, improving writing and research skills, managing a large project, or simply rebuilding confidence, Gwen works to make the process feel manageable, encouraging, and achievable.

Her approach is especially focused on helping students develop skills that extend beyond a single assignment or test. Rather than simply providing an answer, Gwen encourages students to ask questions, make connections, think critically, organize their ideas, and develop strategies they can eventually use independently. The ultimate goal is not to create a student who always needs a tutor—it is to help develop a learner who increasingly believes, “I can do this.”

Gwen also brings a distinctly global perspective to education. Having traveled extensively around the world and studied global development, she believes learning becomes especially powerful when students can connect what they encounter in books and classrooms to the larger world around them. Curiosity, creativity, empathy, problem-solving, and critical thinking are therefore an important part of the Thoughtful Tutor philosophy.

Her work with children extends beyond Thoughtful Tutor. Through Blue Mosaic, the survivor-led nonprofit she founded, Gwen has developed educational and community initiatives including Kids Climate Club and Super Kids Group, using education, storytelling, and hands-on experiences to help young people understand both themselves and the world they are growing up in.

Above all, Gwen believes children deserve to feel seen, heard, encouraged, and capable. A difficult subject, a disappointing grade, an overwhelming assignment, or an unconventional way of learning should never define a student's potential.

Thoughtful Tutor was created around one simple idea: when we take the time to understand how a student learns, we can help that student learn, grow, and thrive.

Nurturance & Organization

Higher-Level Academic Coaching and Independence

Academic Range and Extraordinary Commitment

“Gwen has made such a difference for our son. We originally wanted help keeping up with 5th-grade academics at a competitive, local private school, but she quickly recognized that organization was just as important as the schoolwork itself. She helped him with everything from history and English to homework, planning assignments, and keeping track of what needed to be done. What we appreciate most is her patience and the confidence she has helped him develop. He is becoming a much more organized and independent student. School is no longer something that feels overwhelming.”

Academic Range and Extraordinary Commitment

Gwen has been an incredible resource during our daughter’s senior year. What impressed us most was the range of support she could provide. She helped with SAT preparation, economics, and the constant challenge of balancing advanced coursework, assignments, college applications, and deadlines. When our daughter needed additional help with calculus, Gwen actually went back and refreshed her own calculus skills so that she could work through the material with her. That says so much about the kind of tutor she is. If she doesn’t immediately know something, she will learn it.

Gwen also helped our daughter become more organized, manage her time, and break complicated assignments into manageable pieces. She has a wonderful ability to explain difficult concepts without making a student feel intimidated by them. By the end of their time together, our daughter wasn’t simply better prepared academically, she was more confident and much better equipped for the transition to college.”

“I came to Gwen because I was struggling with a major term paper for my History of Economics course, but she helped me with much more than the paper. She taught me how to narrow a research question, organize sources, develop an argument, structure a long paper, and manage the project in stages instead of panicking at the deadline. We also worked on my overall time management, study habits, and academic organization. She never did the work for me. She helped me figure out how to do better work myself. I left the semester feeling like a stronger writer, researcher, and student.”
